English at Cumberland

Our Intent

Speaking, reading and writing are fundamental to becoming a lifelong learner and achieving success.  At Cumberland, the teaching of English underpins all learning across the curriculum.  We develop the skills that our children need to be able to communicate effectively and creatively through spoken and written language.  We support children to become fluent and confident readers, with secure comprehension skills. We encourage children to develop a love of reading by sharing high quality and diverse texts and teaching topics that inspire and excite young readers and writers.  Our children understand that reading, writing and good communication skills are key to unlocking a world of opportunities, knowledge and imagination

Congratulations to the pupils of Cumberland Infant School!

The School Library Service set the challenge to see how many children could complete the Summer Reading Challenge over the summer holiday and 21 pupils from Cumberland Infant School completed the challenge.  That makes us one of the top winning schools in Portsmouth which means we have won a fabulous bean bag for our new library! Well done to all the pupils who took part and we hope you enjoy relaxing and reading a book on your new beanbag!
