Physical Education at Cumberland

Our P.E. Intent

At Cumberland, we know that movement and physical activity are vital for children before they can be ready to learn. Gross motor skills underpin the fine motor skills required for writing, or even just sitting and listening. We also know that moving makes our children happy!

Championed by our very sporty Headteacher, we strive to offer our children an extensive range of sporting  opportunities, as well as nurturing a lifelong love of physical activity and sport in all our children. Through weekly, inclusive teaching of Real P.E., our children master the fundamental skills of agility, balance and coordination whilst developing our Learning Values. Meanwhile, our project based curriculum gets them dancing like a passenger on the Titanic, scuttling like a minibeast and even performing the Haka. Every day, the children take part in activities such as Jump Start Jonny, Cosmic yoga and playtime sports and activities. Year R in particular love riding the bikes and exploring the new outdoor physical area.

Mrs Herbert, our Headteacher, is passionate about sport and wants to share this with her school. She continues to teach P.E. at KS1 and can be spotted each week in her trainers with a hockey stick, netball or javelin in her hands! The children love this contact with her and strive to impress her with their ever improving skills.

Our annual Sports Week offers the children a unique chance to try an extended range of sports. This varies annually but often includes tri golf, cricket, judo, cheerleading, tennis, seated volleyball and blind football. Our hope is that all children will find an activity that they enjoy so that they leave Cumberland with a love of physical activity and a broad range of skills.

Children who shine in a sport may have the opportunity to compete against other schools in tennis, athletics and gymnastics festivals.
