Our Intent 

Maths at Cumberland Infant School

At Cumberland Infant School, we aim to develop confident, resilient mathematicians who have a deep understanding of number and the ability to apply their skills fluently in a range of contexts. Our curriculum is designed to ensure that all children, regardless of starting point, build secure foundations in early mathematics and develop a positive attitude towards the subject. 

In the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), we follow the statutory framework to provide a rich, play-based environment where children explore mathematical concepts through practical, hands-on experiences. We prioritise the development of number sense through the NCETM Mastering Number programme, where the children do practical, hands-on learning using concrete resources like rekenreks, tens frames, and double-sided counters to help children see the structure of numbers, rather than just counting in ones. They practise the skills of subitising, and early calculation through meaningful contexts and high-quality interactions. Mathematical learning is embedded across both adult-led teaching and child-initiated provisions to ensure breadth and depth of understanding. The children also have weekly Shape, Space and Measure lessons, which are planned using the White Rose Maths Scheme 

In Key Stage 1, we build on these foundations using a structured and coherent approach through the White Rose Maths scheme and the NCETM Mastering Number programme. Our curriculum is carefully sequenced to support progression in fluency, reasoning, and problem-solving. We ensure that key concepts are taught in small steps, allowing children to deepen their understanding before moving on. 

Across EYFS and KS1, we place a strong emphasis on: 

  • developing fluency in key number facts (including number bonds, place value, doubles, halves, and times tables)  

  • using concrete, pictorial, and abstract representations to secure understanding  

  • encouraging mathematical talk to develop reasoning and explanation skills  

  • providing regular opportunities for retrieval and practice to support long-term memory  

We intend for all pupils to become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, to reason mathematically, and to solve problems with increasing sophistication. By embedding these skills early, we prepare children not only for the next stage of their education but also for the practical demands of everyday life.
