Mathematics at Cumberland

Our Intent

Mathematics at Cumberland Infant School

At Cumberland Infant School we teach most of our subjects through an integrated
curriculum but maths is taught discreetly. We use the White Rose Scheme of maths
in Key Stage One and the Mastering Number programme by NCETM in Year R as
well as providing mathematical opportunities in our child initiated continual provision
as we follow the Early Years Foundation Stage profile.
In Key Stage one, where possible the children get opportunities to apply their maths
skills in some of their project learning. For example, in the Year One DT project, ‘The
Greatest Show in Earth’ the children apply their measuring skills to make their circus
wagons and in The Year Two Project, ‘An Island Adventure the children compare the
temperatures in Portsmouth with the temperatures in New Zealand throughout the
year. Children are given opportunities to learn, practice and apply their mathematical
skills within a broad and balanced curriculum.
We understand that children need lots of opportunity to master maths through
practical activities, exploration and discussion. They are provided with concrete
apparatus to master their confidence in the procedures of maths which then enables
them to develop the ability to solve problems through decision making and reasoning
in a range of contexts. We aim to ensure that children are given regular opportunities
to become fluent in the key number facts in maths i.e. number bonds, place value,
times tables, doubles, and halves through regular practise so that they can develop
their conceptual understanding and have the ability to recall and apply knowledge
with speed and accuracy.
In adult life we use some form of mathematics every day, be it in a basic form e.g.
telling the time, using money, measuring or in a more complex way as part of our job
e.g. accountancy . We therefore know the importance of building good foundations in
basic mathematical skills so that the children can further develop their
understanding, ability, enjoyment and confidence to apply their knowledge and skills
as they progress through life.
