History at Cumberland

History Intent

Who was to blame for the Great Fire of London? Why did so many people die when the Titanic hit an iceberg? Who am I and how have I grown? These are some of the questions our children consider as they develop their understanding and awareness of the past.

At Cumberland, we understand that history is about so much more than learning about past events.  We believe that thinking skills lie at the heart of good history teaching and therefore encourage the children to become historians. Our teaching equips them with the ability to think critically, ask insightful questions and grow with an inquisitive nature.

Our engaging project-led curriculum enables the children to fully immerse themselves in significant historical events.  In Year 1, we travel back in time to experience what life was like in 1666 and in Year 2 we take a fascinating trip aboard the Titanic. Both activities allow the children to consolidate their historical knowledge and skills in an engaging and thought-provoking way.

In Early Years, we begin to discover our own identity and learn about our past. Within their lifetime, these children have experienced first-hand a major historical event that has changed the world. At Cumberland we inspire pupils to discuss and gain a perspective of these challenging issues in a safe and stimulating environment.
