Art and Design at Cumberland

 Our Intent

Art at Cumberland Infant School
We value, encourage and promote through our art curriculum opportunities
for children to use and express their imagination, which is one of our six
Learning Values.

How many other schools can say that they are the setting for a book written by
Michael Rosen? Our links with the book’s illustrator means that there are wonderful
drawings of the school in his book ‘Monster’ and our children use these drawings as
inspiration for their ink and watercolour paintings in our ‘Great Waterfront City’
project in Year 1.

Our engaging project-led curriculum enables the children to create like artists, be it
as painter, sculptor, printer, sketcher, collage artist or art appreciator. It is a
wonderful interest we feel passionately about developing in our children from EYFS
through to Year 2, giving them an outlet for their imagination and creative side, for
many it will become a life –long hobby that they can pursue anywhere in the world.
In EYFS the children have first -hand experience exploring the tools and materials
that they will use as they move into Key Stage 1 through continuous transient art
provision. ‘Loose Parts Art’ is their first project where they study an Artist, Andy
Goldsworthy.

We utilise the Southsea art seen in our locality, to inspire the next generation of
artists. MyDogSighs, the graphic street artist, is the inspiration for Year 2’s Guess
Who where they study an eye. Sculptors such as Nick Park’s work are studied to
inspire the children to create their fantasy clay figures in the Imagination Station
Project.
